BROXHEAD, manor in Headley
Hypothetical Old English 'Broccesheafod'='badger's head' or 'hill'. The 'head' names were discussed by Dickins in Place Names of Surrey, where the theory was advanced that at such places animal (or occasionally human) heads were put on display for some religious, ritual or totemic reason. Gover notes that the spelling 'Brocashead' in 1639 is due to the Brocas family holding the manor.
