Coates 1989 BUCKLERS HARD, village in Beaulieu 'Hard' as along much of the coast of Hampshire and Sussex, means 'firm landing place'; here probably originally of current-deposited pebbles. The Montagues have been lords of Beaulieu since the 18th century, but the village gained its permanent name from the less illustrious 'Buckler' family established there since at least 1664. The first example is interesting, because it suggests that 'bury' was still thought of as a living place name element in the mid 18th century; cf COLBURY EXBURY. |
