BULLINGTON, parish and hamlet
Old English 'hilltop site of a bull' or 'of a man called Bula'. It is not clear whether the original reference is to the slopes S of the river Dever or the hill to the N of it on which is TIDBURY RING. The former is possible since the church is on that side of the river. The village and hamlet and 'Lower' and 'Upper' Bullington (OS 1 to 50000 map), earlier 1228 'West-' and 'Est-.' The '-ington' forms are by analogy with the common type seen in eg nearby 'Avington, Hannington, Ovington, Tufton'.
