BURGATE (UPPER and LOWER), manor, tenement in Fordingbridge of Beaulieu Abbey
Old English/Middle English 'gate of/at the fortification'. The reference appears to be to the 'camp' across the river Avon at Godshill, called 'Godmanes Ca[m?]p' on early OS maps. But perhaps, since Upper Burgate is on the northern limit of Fordingbridge parish, it is 'gate of the town or borough', if Fordingbridge was ever called this. The two tenements are distinguished from the 14th century as 'Op-/Over-' and 'Nethere-'. A grant of about 1249 mentions a moor and a meadow called 'la Burmore, la Burmede'. Often associated in Beaulieu documents with 'Gorley' (about 1210 'Garleia, Gorlega' hypothetical Old English 'Garleah'='triangular wood/clearing'.
