BURITON
Old English 'farm by the fortification'. The reference is to the iron age earthworks on Butser Hill, which may also feature in 'War Down' (OS 1 to 50000 map), perhaps containing Old English '(ge)weorc'='(earth)works'. The older name of the parish was 'Mapledurham' which survives only in the name of a farm. This was hypothetical Old English 'Mapuldorham' (1086 'Mapeldresham' 1214 'Mapeldurham')='maple tree estate'.
