BURLEY, parish, that part of Ringwood within the Forest, Forest walk
Hypothetical Old English 'Burhleah'='fort wood/clearing', perhaps with reference to the earthwork called 'Castle Hill' (modern OS 1 to 63360 map). But if Morris is right that the Domesday Book entry for Ringwood mentioning 4 hides in the Forest refers to Burley, then we may be justified in taking 'burh' in its later sense of 'borough, town', and the name would mean 'clearing/wood of the town' (ie: Ringwood).
