CADNAM, hamlet in Copythorne and roundabout
Old English/Middle English 'Cada's estate or hemmed-in land'; the topography
gives no real clues. Gover notes that a ford in the parish is 1279
'Kademannesford' and suggests that 'Cada' may have been a short form for this
name. The man's name looks remarkably as though it could be for hypothetical
Primitive Welsh 'Caduan' (the source of Old English 'Caedmon') ie: the place
name could date back to the earliest contacts between Welsh and English; but the
forms are far too late for certainty. At any rate, the frequent 'Cada' is likely
to derive as a name from the British hypothetical element 'Catu-' (hypothetical
Primitive Welsh 'Cad)'='battle'.
