CAMS (HALL), two manors in Fareham
A highly unusual name derived from hypothetical Primitive Welsh 'cambeis'' the ancestor of W 'cemaes'='shallow bend in a river, shallow bay'. Gover derives it ultimately from hypothetical British 'cambo-'='crooked', with reference to Wallington River. There is a marked bend here not just a slight one; there is a most noticeable bag shaped bay. Credibility attaches to this explanation because the place is adjacent to WALLINGTON, whose name attests the presence of Welsh speakers into the Anglo Saxon period.
