CATHERINGTON
One of a notoriously difficult group of names, cf 'Caterham' (Surrey)
'Chadderton' (La). It used to be thought (1) that 'cater' represented the
hypothetical British 'cater-' hypothetical Primitive Welsh 'cader' the
equivalent of Ir. 'cathir'='fortified town', or (2) that hypothetical 'cater-'
(hypothetical Primitive Welsh 'cadeir') was borrowed from VL
'cat(h)edra'='chair', and that it was a topographical word. However this word
gives hypothetical Primitive Welsh 'cadeir' and all names derived from it in
English should show 'd'. This appears only once in the record for Catherington,
and clearly another story is needed for at least some of these difficult names
(see Jackson 1953: 555). Maybe 'cater' in place names is a direct borrowing from
the Latin 'catedra' just mentioned, though one would still expect '-d-' in
English place names derived from it. Some of the Old English forms have been
explained as containing an Old English personal name 'Cat(t)or' of Primitive
Welsh origin (seen in Malory's Sir 'Cador' of Cornwall). The present name means
'farm of the Cateringas', a folk name perhaps meaning 'dwellers at (the)
'Cater'' or 'people associated with Cat(t)or'.
The present spelling has influenced the church dedication to St Catherine -
the medieval church was All Saints (ex inf. Mr J. Pile).
