CHALTON
Old English 'chalk farm'. Precise sense unclear; there are plenty of other farms on the chalk downs. It seems to make sense only if taken to mean it was unusual, eg the first farm established on the chalk, or a subfarm within a large estate whose chief member was off the chalk. The loss of the stop consonant can be observed in a string of medieval spellings showing the fricative [x], spelt 'gh' eg 1282 'Chalghton'. Contrast CHAWTON.
