Coates 1989 CHANDLER'S FORD, modern parish carved out of North Stoneham The ancient name appears to mean 'ford of Searnaegel', which would have to be a nickname since it means 'withered or dry nail' in Old English. The modern form may assimilate the old form to the common word 'chandler' or may be an entirely new name. The 'le Chaundler' family is known in nearby South Stoneham from the 14th century. The ford carried a Roman road (Margary 422) over Monks Brook. |
