CHAPEL in Southampton
So called from the chapel variously referred to in the 13th century as 'capella s(an)c(t)e Trinitatis de Suhamt'' and the chapel of St Mary's church ul (ecclesia s(an)c(t)e Marie cum capella). St Mary's was the mother church of old Southampton, and Patterson (1966: 7) reports that this area beyond the medieval town walls was long referred to as 'Old Hampton'.
