Single red brick arch built on concrete abutments, late 19th century.
Strengthened to cope with heavy traction engines, 1901, with a ferroconcrete
arch of Hennebique's patent, design ed by L G Mouchel. This is the first
reinforced concrete bridge in England, but the feature is hidden behind the
brickwork.
The construction is a mistake. It was designed as a 36degree skew brick arch
with 18ft square span and 22ft3in skew span. Brick arch courses were wrongly
laid parallel to the abutements instead of square to the road centre line. The
remedial scheme agreed between County Surveyor and the contractor was the
Hennebique reinforced concrete arch.
