CHIDDEN in Hambledon
Apparently hypothetical Old English 'Cittandenu'='Citta's valley'; but there is a group of spellings from the Anglo Saxon period like 958=975 (12th century transcript) and, 1042 'citwara mearce'='at the boundary of the people of Chid(den)', and it is unusual for this type of abbreviated expression to be based on a personal name rather than on a place name element proper.
