CANDOVER, three parishes
The parishes take their name from the stream whose name (following Ekwall) may have been from hypothetical British 'Caniodubri'='beautiful waters'.
The three specifiers come into use for the separate parishes/manors in the 13th century. 'Chilton Candover' may be an amalgamation of two place names. Around 1300-1400 the parish is alternatively recorded as just 'Chilton'. But a slightly earlier tradition has early 13th century 'Chiltecandevere' and the like. The place may therefore have been called either hypothetical Old English 'Ciltantun' (or maybe that was the name for what is now called 'Chilton Manor' (OS)) or hypothetical Middle English 'Chilte Candever'='the Candover at 'Chilte''. Either way the first element appears to be the hypothetical 'cilta' discussed under CHILCOMB. The east bank of the stream is overlooked by a fairly steep slope, on which the manor farm is situated. However one 13th century document shows a form 'Childe Candever' suggesting that the first element is really hypothetical Old English 'cild'='young retainer' (or the like), as in other 'Chiltons' (eg Berkshire, Somerset). Despite being backed by only one recorded spelling, this solution may be the better one. This view is reinforced by the discussion below [Preston Candover]
