CLIDDESDEN
Ekwall postulates a hypothetical Old English form 'clyde' deriving from 'clud'='lump, mass'. Rather than multiplying new lexical elements it might be better to suggest that hypothetical 'Clyde' is the dative/locative case form of a hypothetical old place name 'Clud' viz. hypothetical 'Cludi' which is now lost. The present name would be 'valley of (a place with the fossilized place name) hypothetical 'Clyde''. This might have been a name for the adjacent Farleigh Hill (see FARLEIGH WALLOP).
