Coates 1989 COLBURY, modern parish carved out of Eling, now split between Dibden Purlieu and Eling Probably Middle English 'Cola's manor'. I know of no ancient earthwork here. One 'Cola uenator'='Cola the hunter' held the Domesday Book manor of ELLINGHAM; see this name for its relation to ELING and therefore its relevance to the interpretation of COLBURY. He also held land in Langley (1086 'Langelie') adjacent to Colbury. In 1441 there was a 'Coltrowlane' in Eling, so perhaps the 'trow'='tree' commemorated him too. |
