Coates 1989 COLDEN COMMON, common in Twyford, modern parish A difficult name. The second element is Old English 'denu'='valley', presumably that to the NW of Owslebury, taken later as '-down' (1540) and '-end' (1759). The first may be a metathesized form of Old English 'clofa'='cleft', ie: hypothetical 'colfa.' The valley in question is steep sided and narrow. |
