COLDREY (HOUSE), extraparochial area adjacent to Froyle
Seems to be unmistakably Old English '(char)coal stream(s)', though for
exactly what reason is not known. It may be significant that a mile or so away
is 'Isnage Farm' (973-974 (12th century transcript) 'isen hyrste (gate)' 1205
'Isonhirst') whose name means 'iron wooded hill'. If so, the charcoal would have
been used in smelting. There is a dammed stream here, a left tributary of the
Wey.
