COOMBE, tithing of East Meon
Cumb usually denotes a bowl- or trough-shaped valley with three steep sides
(cf Cole 1982). Such valleys are common near the chalk scarp, and there is a
Combe just across the county boundary in Berkshire (formerly in Hampshire). Also
see Faccombe village, which actually overlooks its valley from the top of a
spur.
