Coates 1989 COPYTHORNE, modern parish carved out of Eling Middle English 'pollarded (haw)thorn', a place name also in evidence in Hertfordshire and Surrey as 'Copthorne'. (Cf also the CUTTED THORN in Southampton.) Middle English 'copped' could apparently also mean 'having the upper part removed', of a house, or conversely 'having a high top', and there is a recurring house name type 'Copthall' (eg Middlesex). There is, coincidentally, a 'Copied Hall' in this parish. Which meaning is intended, only local knowledge can decide. There is also a 'Pollard Moor' (sometimes appearing on modern maps as 'Pollards Moor') which may involve a surname. |
