COSHAM, modern parish formed of Widley and Wymering
The majority of early spellings, including one in the Laud text of the Old
English Chronicle (early 12th century) ('s.a.' 1015), are of the type 'Cosham'
without a trace of the medial 'e' which would license the interpretation 'estate
or hemmed-in land of a man called Cossa', though Domesday Book and some 13th
century spellings point in that direction. If it is not that, then what it might
be is anybody's guess. It might contain Old English 'cost' (1) 'excellent', or
(2) 'tansy', but the lack of 't' in any recorded form offers difficulties worse
than derivation from 'Cossa'. On balance, the first interpretation is more
likely. There are odd spellings of the type 'Corsham' in the 13th century which
are hard to account for. Corsham (Wiltshire) shows the same development, and
seems to be of the same origin as Cosham.
