CRONDALL, parish and hundred
Old English 'at the (chalk )pits'. The chalk outcrops here over a platform of the Upper Greensand. The word 'crundel' was discussed especially in relation to minor place names of this area by Grundy (1922 - and contrast Baring 1907). It appears to have meant literally 'crooked diggings', and to have been applied to more irregularly shaped diggings than 'dell' was. Other instances of the same word are found, eg in 'The Crundle' (Buriton) and in numerous Old English boundary marks (Smith, English Place Name Elements I: 116-7).

... [from Bourne outside Farnham] ... on towards Crondall upon a soil that soon became stiff loam and flint at top with a bed of chalk beneath. We did not go to Crondall; but kept along over Slade Heath, and through a very pretty place called Well. ...
