CROOKHAM (VILLAGE), modern parish carved out of Crondall
Apparently 'crook estate' or 'crook hemmed-in land', but it is not clear in
what sense of 'crook' and it cannot be decided whether Old English 'ham' or
'hamm' is involved. It is possible that the first element is Old English
'croh'='nook', as in Crookham (Berkshire), in which case the nook would be the
notch in the 76m contour line south of Crookham village, cut across by the
Basingstoke Canal.
