Coates 1989 CROW, manor in Ringwood Appears, from its situation, to contain hypothetical Primitive Welsh 'criw'='ford, weir, (in the plural) stepping stones', like 'Crewe' (Cheshire). Gover suggests a relation with Welsh 'craw'='hovel', which may suit the forms better, though Padel (1985: 73) notes that the two elements are readily confusable in English place names of Cornish origin. Both words are discussed by Wakelin (1969). |
