CRUX EASTON
Old English 'east farm'. It is SE of Ashmansworth and Northeast of
Hurstbourne Tarrant. The reference point is probably the hundred-head manor of
Hurstbourne. Crux Easton is in a detached part of Hurstbourne hundred (later
called 'Pastrow') east of the main block.
The manor was held in 1086 by 'Croch venator'='Croc the huntsman', and his
descendants continued to hold it into the 13th century. It is thus 'Croc's
Easton', 'Crux' appearing in 1607 (Smith, English Place Name Elements I: 117 is
wrong; it is not Latin 'crux'='cross').
