Coates 1989 CUPERNHAM, hamlet, now suburb, of Romsey Hypothetical Old English/Middle English 'Cypeaernahamm'='hemmed-in land with (fish-)basket buildings'. The first element may alternatively be the hypothetical Old English 'cupe' same meaning, not attested till Middle English and the ancestor of ModE 'cup'. The 'hamm' is a typical site for such a name between two rivers (a version of Dodgson's 'hamm' -2a classification (1973)), namely a branch of the Test and its left tributary which rises at Ampfield. |
