Old English 'quern bridge'. It can hardly be 'bridge by a quern', as Gover suggests. The association of the two words is very difficult. Old English 'cweorn' appears to exist as a simplex name in 'Quorn' (Leicestershire), but this is actually a reduction of hypothetical Old English 'Cweorndun'='hill where quernstones were got'. The forms of our name suggest 'bridge of quernstones', for the first element seems to show traces of the genitive plural ending '-a'. Whether it is credible that a bridge over the widening river Hamble could be made of stones suitable for or recycled from handmills is a question I prefer to leave open.
