Coates 1989 CUT(TED) THORN, location in Southampton This spot on Southampton Common was the site of the Southampton courts leet. Gover says it served as a borough boundary mark. It is recorded eg as 1254 'Cuttethorne' 1488=1490 'Cutted thorne (crosse)' (VCH III: 492). A pollard hawthorn is the most likely source of the name, but a reference to ritual tree mutilation (usually however confined to ashes) is not out of the question. Cf also 'Cutbush Lane' in Bitterne and COPYTHORNE. |
