Coates 1989 DAMERHAM, formerly in Wiltshire Hypothetical Old English 'domera hamm'='hemmed-in land of the judges'. Apparently a riverside 'hamm' site of Dodgson's type 3. Damerham was a royal manor, and its proximity to Salisbury might account for the name: a residence provided for travelling justices, or, more likely, one whose revenues were dedicated to their support. The form with '-a-' is first found 1231 ('Damerham alias Domerham'). |
