DANEBURY HILL, earthwork in Nether Wallop
The earliest records, 1491 'Duwnebury Hill' 1637 'Dunbury' make it quite
clear that it has nothing to do with Danes. It is rather 'hill fort'. The
tendency to invent history may also be seen in 'Norsebury' in Micheldever,
another hillfort (902 'naesan byrig' in the time of Edward I 'Nosebury') which
is really 'fort at the ness' (later 'nose'), ie: the western end of the little
ridge between the valleys of the Dever and Cranbourne, on which the fort is
placed west of its highest point; and 'John of Gaunt's Deer Park' in King's
Somborne (John held the manor only through his wife, and the authentic name was
'How Park' (cf 1200 'Howude'='hillspur wood')).
