DROXFORD
Ekwall, in the Dictionary of English Place Names suggests derivation from hypothetical Old English 'drocen'='a dry place', hence 'ford at the dry place'. I cannot improve on this. The 13th century spellings with 'T' remain unexplained. There was a 'throc briggae'=' plank or trestle bridge' in the bounds of Droxford (BCS 393, S276) which Grundy (1924: 77) places where the modern A333 crosses a left tributary of the river Hamble, but despite the partial similarity of the name to 'Droxford' no common origin can be suggested if we go on appearances; the forms in 'D' appear in MSS. whose supposed archetypes are of the Anglo Saxon period. But there is sufficient doubt about the two MSS. in question to leave the matter open, the archetype of one being of uncertain date and the other MS. being spurious.

... you can see up this valley ... as far as West-Meon, and down it as far as Soberton. Corhampton, Warnford, Meon-Stoke and Droxford come within these two points; so that here are six villages on this bourne within the space of about five miles.
