Coates 1989 DUNBRIDGE, manor in Mottisfont The clear early tradition is hypothetical Old English 'Denebrycg'='bridge in The Valley' (cf (EAST) DEAN; it is at the eastern end of this valley). Gover wonders if the first element could be a river name (cf DUN) but there is no support for this, especially given the unstressed medial syllable, which tells against an old river name like 'Don'; this would have compounded directly with 'brycg'. The 13th century transformation is unexplained. It would be very surprising if this major place name had been influenced by 'Dun Wood' (no early forms; OS 1 to 50000 map) in the adjacent parish of Sherfield English. |
