ANTON (EAST), hamlet, now suburb, of Andover
Old English 'eastan tune'='east of the town' (ie: Andover or possibly Charlton); or, since it is recorded late, its Middle English derivative. Cf 'Easton Town' (Wiltshire). It has been misunderstood as 'east' followed by a place name, in a glaring example of misapplied antiquarianism. The manuscript of Tacitus' Agricola in which a place name 'Antona' appears was well known in the 18th century. This is a corruption of 'Trisantona' the river name 'Trent' or 'Tarrant'. Someone has clearly associated this ghost name with that of Andover discovered 'Estentowne' in the parish, and jumped to a hasty conclusion. By pure coincidence, East Anton is really the site of a Roman settlement where the Roman roads Margary 4b (Port Way) and 43 cross.
