Coates 1989 OAKLEY (WEST and EAST), village and hamlet (now a dormitory of Basingstoke) OAKLEY (NORTH), scattered settlement in Kingsclere Old English 'oak wood'. The three hamlets (West, East, North) testify to scattered settlement. The parent village of West Oakley (now merely 'Oakley') is called 1256 'Chircheacle' from the church being there. (There is none in North Oakley even now.) A further possible mention of the place in Anglo Saxon times is fully discussed under HERRIARD. |
