TYTHERLEY (WEST and EAST), two parishes/manors
Hypothetical Old English 'Tiedreleah'='fragile wood', as perhaps of a newly established plantation. Distinguished as 1212 'Westuterlie' 1291 'Estuderlegh'. After Domesday Book most simplex forms may refer to East Tytherley, as the tradition acknowledging West Tytherley by separate name seems to be early. East Tytherley may thus be the parent settlement.
