EASTON
Old English 'east farm'. The form of 825 occurs in a context making clear that it means '(boundary) of the people of Easton'. It is east of the lost place with an ancient type of name 'Igtun' on the adjacent island in the river Itchen, as the Old English bounds of Martyr Worthy make plain. More weakly, it is north-east of Winchester, which might explain the name.

This village of Easton lies at a few miles towards the north-east from Winchester. It is distant from Botley by the way which I came about fifteen or sixteen miles.
...
... I came through the Duke's Park to come to Easton, which is the next village below Avington. ... The village of Easton is, like that of Avington, close by the water-side [River Itchen]. The meadows are the attraction; and, indeed, it is the meadows that have caused the villages to exist.
...
As we had to come to this place [Easton], which is three miles up the river Itchen from Winchester, we crossed the Winchester and Basingstoke road at King's Worthy. ...
