EFFORD in Milford-on-Sea
Old English/Middle English 'ford passable at the ebb' over Avon Water. The stream is not now tidal because of the sluice at Keyhaven. Morris identifies this with the Domesday Book manor of 'Einforde' but this does not square with the other spellings. It may be a bad form for the adjacent 'Wainsford' (1365 'Wenefford' 1461 'Wenford'='wagon ford').
