ELLINGHAM
Hypothetical Old English 'AEthelingaham(m)' either 'estate' or 'hemmed-in land of the 'AEthelingas' cf ELING. Maybe 'of the people of Eling'. The at first sight bizarre form of about 1165 appears to confirm Old English 'th' by showing 's'; this would de a poor spelling for 'd'. (In addition cf about 1240 'Elinkelond'' in Charford. There was a further place name, in Godshill bailiwick of the New Forest (about 6 miles North of Ellingham), which appears to contain the same element (1626 'Elinge Thornes (Hill)' 1670 'Island Thorns (Wood)').)
The site is at the Avon water meadows; possibly therefore a Dodgsonian 'hamm-3'.
