EVERTON, village in Milford-on-Sea
Old English 'farm on the (river) Gifl' a river name and place name duplicated in 'Yeovil(ton)' (Somerset). The modern name appears to rely on the Old English word 'eofor'='boar', but there are no such forms till the ModE period. It is perhaps suggested by the adjacent EFFORD, as if the name were hypothetical 'Efford-ton' with an easily understandable loss of 'd'.
