EXBURY, hamlet in Exbury and Lepe
Ekwall suggests that the personal name involved is an Old English form
corresponding to Old Norse 'Ioarr'; this would be the regularly formed
'Eohhere'. This is ingenious, but hard to square with the universal '-k-'. It is
otherwise compatible with the Domesday Book form, which would show 'T-' from a
lost preposition 'aet'. An alternative might be hypothetical Old English
'iecere'='increaser', possibly used as a personal name much as 'Streona'
probably similar in meaning, is used as a by name in Old English for one
'Eadric'. The Domesday Book form does not support this. On the other hand, Gover
suggests that 'Agarton' in Milford-on-Sea (12th century 'Elcreton' and always
showing 'c' or 'k') contains the name 'Ealhhere'. If this is right, Ekwall's
etymology for Exbury is supported to some extent.
Gover associates the second element with the earthwork on a low promontory at
the mouth of the Beaulieu river, though this is at Lower Exbury and not near the
putative parent village where the church is. Possibly, therefore 'Eohhere's or
Iecere's manor'.
