Coates 1989 EYEWORTH, Domesday Book manor in Ashley Walk, modern lodge and walk Probably hypothetical Old English 'Iwwaru'='yew weir or fishpond'. There is a pond near the lodge, recorded in the late 18th century as 'Ivory Lodge'. 'Waru' is a form related to the 'wer' which yields modern 'weir'. If the modern name is not corrupt, it may indicate that an element 'waroth'='streamside meadow or marsh' survived, but this is less likely as 'worth' is a common outcome of the corruption of various other elements. |
