FARLINGTON
Ekwall, in the Dictionary of English Place Names offers a solution bearing
his own stamp: hypothetical Old English 'Fearnlea(g)ingatun'='farm of those
associated with a place called 'Fearnleah'' ('bracken clearing'). No such place
has been identified in this connection and it is impossible to know whether it
is to be associated in any way with FAREHAM (Old English 'Fearnham') though the
supposed place name is formally acceptable. The only alternative would involve
guessing at the former existence of a hypothetical man's name 'Faerla'. (See
further under FAREHAM.)
