Coates 1989 FINCHDEAN in Idsworth; also a hamlet Old English 'Finc's valley', or just possibly 'finch valley'. The hundred was in Domesday Book called after Chalton ('Ceptune'). Alternative names for the hundred were 1168 'Wulpette'='wolf pit' and 1215 'Ulethorn'='owls' thorn(-bush)'. |
