FOXLEASE, Domesday Book manor, house in Lyndhurst
Old English 'Cocc's clearing' or 'woodcock clearing'. It took a 'manorial' form with '-s' as early as the late 15th century (about 1490 'Cokkesleys') and this was reformed, perhaps in the early 19th century (1826 'Foxleaze'), perhaps as a euphemism, as if it meant 'fox meadow'.
