Coates 1989 GILKICKER (POINT), promontory Thus in 17th century. Completely obscure. There is or was a field called 'Gilkicke' in Whitwell (Westmorland), cf Place Names of Westmorland I, 151. The point takes its name from a three sided brick column, faced with stone, marking an underwater spit close to the site of 'Haslar Castle' (Portsmouth Papers 30). It had a partner 'Kickergill' surely one of the most extraordinary place name pairs in the country. |
