GUNDLETON in Bighton
No early spellings have been found. Possibly 'Gunild's farm', this being a well known Anglo Scandinavian female name, found in 1324 in 'Gunnildcroft' 1365 'Gonyldegate' in the New Forest. Or it may be related, due to a misreading of some earlier manuscript, to the minor local name '(Edney's) Girdledon' in Bighton, cited (unlocated) by Grundy (1921: 109). But the name may not really be ancient.
