HALE
Old English 'healh'='nook, angle', often of an administrative area. Gover notes that Hale was in the NW corner of the county (seen from the New Forest) until Whitsbury and Martin were absorbed from Wiltshire in 1895, but the Charfords and Breamore were beyond it. Rather, the eastern end of Fordingbridge hundred, up against the western limit of the New Forest.
