HAMBLE (officially HAMBLE-LE-RICE)
The village is named from the river (about 750 'Homelea' 900 (early 11th century transcript) 'hamele') which is Old English 'hamelea'='crooked (literally 'mutilated') river'. The allusion must be to the big bend at Bursledon. The qualifying phrase means 'in the brushwood or undergrowth' (Old English 'hris')).
