HANNINGTON, parish, and manor in Kingsclere
Hypothetical Old English 'Haningtun'='farm of Hana', an Old English man's name meaning 'cock'. (There was a manor in adjacent Kingsclere called 1333 'Hannington Lancelevy' 1586 'Hanyton Launces' from the name of the tenant in 1333, John 'Lancelevy'='raised lance' (Anglo Norman) (VCH IV: 258-9). There is a 'Lance Levy Farm' in Sherfield-on-Loddon.)
